Nests...

Project models from 1988 recreated in SketchUp - Selected forms within Juan Gris' Breakfast are cut and folded along one of their respective edges. The painting plane is then folded into a box to create a cubic armature, which is then collapsed to create an additional cruciform support - originally 'boxed folds,' become 'nests.'

2011_1126_Room_Ride_2011

A project from 1986 revived in SketchUp.

"Room/Ride" - Arising out of dissatisfaction that the painting had simply generated horizontal planes in the Design Centre and that the building represented a programme rather than being reflection of a poststructuralist space, the Room is a further development of the use of the painting and attempts an architectural space "as is". Perhaps, it could be seen as an alternative to the endless perspective of a universal grid or as a hidden corner within the grid. The painting is folded into a box - the room and planes are projected to create both horizontal and vertical enclosure. A reading of the painting in terms of lines and volumetric fragments are added so that no single interpretation is stressed. A further transformation involves the rotation of an armature of planes so that the structure becomes a-centric.

SketchUp model of Coupled

2011_0900_coupled

In order to create a denser form and greater spatial complexity, Coupled (1987) takes two models from the Gates series (#1 and #4) and combines them, registering them along their respective bases.

2011_0800_gates

The Gates series (1987) continues earlier painting transformation experiments (slicing, projection...) with simple folds along shape outlines that become structural and self-supporting. In the tradition of large, metal sculptures, the original postcard models were painted black to articulate the new forms.

Emulating the technique developed for transforming Juan Gris' Breakfast, renderings were filtered and processed to create maps for simple volumes which were then modeled further in a sequence of combinations.

I just tried the plugin this morning. You only get 30s, because it's a trial, but very cool!

Middle Village Atlas

This Oulipian-inspired project represents one chapter of a series of 500 procedurally-generated structures located in the 70 neighborhoods and villages of Queens. Vocabulary elements are derived from Juan Gris’ Breakfast, and their fabrication draws on temporary installation techniques.
